Angel Bat Dawid is a Black American composer, improviser, clarinetist, pianist, vocalist & DJ.

Charles Joseph Smith

Charles was born and raised in Chicago, and raised in the Beverly neighborhood as a crossover musician, composer, and dancer. His piano teachers included Sofia Zukerman, Kenneth Drake, William Heiles, Gustavo Romero, Emilio del Rosario, and Pawel Checinski, and his composition/theory teachers included Charlottte Lehnhoff and Don Malone. In his teenage years, he won first place at both the CAMTA and SAM Piano Competitions. He earned a BM in Piano at Roosevelt U., MM, and DMA degrees in piano performance at the U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While abroad in the 2000s in France, he went to the French Piano Institute in Paris, performed in debut piano recitals in Ganges and St. Martin de Londres, and performed in two private salon concerts in Frontingan. In Italy, he competed in the IBLA Grand Prize Competition, and in Hungary, he attended the Racz School of Music camp in Budapest.

Angel Bat Dawid

Angel Bat Dawid is a Black American composer, improviser, clarinetist, pianist, vocalist & DJ. Her critically acclaimed Album " The Oracle,” released by Chicago label International Anthem was created entirely alone, recorded using only her cell phone in various locations, from London to South Africa. Angel composed and premiered “Requiem for Jazz" at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, and also composed “Peace: A Suite for Skylanding” commissioned by the Art Institute of Chicago for Yoko Ono’s outdoor Skylanding Installation in 2020. Angel tours internationally with her septet "Tha Brothahood; " they are releasing their album LIVE, making NPR’s best of 2020 list. She also leads the all-woman trio Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty. As half of the duo DAOUI, Angel & sound artist Oui Ennui produced, mixed and self-released their album “Message from the DAOUI',' which was featured at Tusk Festival 2020. Angel is the clarinetist in Damon Locks Black Monument Ensemble and hosts a monthly music show on NTS Radio.

About the Performance

Charles Joseph Smith (piano and drums) and Angel Bat Dawid (piano, clarinet, and voice/ spoken word) perform as a duo. The performance is inspired by the Mothership 9 performance on October 2019 of Charles and Angel at Elastic Arts Foundation, in a style of a series of creative improvisations.
